Taking in jeans by hand and on the sewing machine

Making trousers slimmer starts with taking in the waistband. Tapering the legs is possible too, and tapering and shortening can be done in one go. You try the trousers on in the studio, tailor Pierre Hassan pins them and you see straight away how they will fall.

There is no need to throw away a good pair of trousers because they are too wide. Whether you have lost weight, found a vintage pair of jeans or have trousers that are only wrong at the waist: you usually get them back within 3 to 5 working days as if they were made for you.

Taking in the waistband or waist

If your trousers sit well on the hips but the waistband gapes at the back, we take them in at the waist. On smart trousers or chinos we usually do that through the centre back seam. If more than 3 to 4 cm needs to come off, we spread it across 3 seams, so the pockets and the fit stay straight.

Taking in jeans at the waistband is a little trickier, because the waistband is double stitched and there is often a belt loop right in the middle. Still, on jeans it can be done invisibly: we open the waistband, take in the centre back seam, topstitch the waistband again with the same thread and put the loop back. From the outside you cannot see a thing.

On very wide trousers it sometimes looks better to take in the side seams a little as well. We look at that together during the fitting.

Tapering the legs

Tapering wide legs, slimming straight trousers to a slim fit or making jeans skinny: we take in the leg along the inside seam, the outside seam or both, depending on how much needs to come off and where the stitching sits.

On jeans with a flat felled seam, the double topstitched seam you see on the inside of the leg, it is more work. That seam has to be refolded and topstitched again to keep the original look. We tell you that in advance.

How much slimmer you want them, you decide during the fitting. We pin both legs and let you walk, sit and bend, so you know for sure they feel right.

Tapering and shortening in one go

Often trousers are too wide and too long at the same time. Then we do it in one go: the legs tapered and the hem to length. You only need one fitting.

We pin the width first and then the length, because a slimmer leg falls differently over your shoe. So bring the shoes you usually wear with them.

Only want the length adjusted, keeping the original hem on jeans? See the page Trouser and jeans hemming.

Letting out trousers

The other way round is possible too, within limits. Letting out trousers usually works by 1 to 2 cm, depending on how much seam allowance there is in the seams. Smart trousers often have some extra fabric in the centre back seam, jeans usually less.

If there is not enough fabric, we can sometimes add a piece to the waistband or make an elastic insert on the inside. You cannot see it from the outside and it gives just the room you need.

Send a photo of the inside of the waistband and we will see straight away how much room there is.

Smart trousers, chinos and jeans

Every pair of trousers needs its own approach. Lined wool trousers with pleats are taken in with care for the pleats and the pressed crease, so the line of the trousers stays intact. Chinos are rewarding work: the fabric is sturdy and the seams are simple.

With jeans it is all about keeping the look. Same thread colour, same stitching, same flat felled seam. A vintage pair of jeans you have finally found comes back as if it has always been your size.

We also take in suits and suit trousers. That can be part of a full alteration, together with the jacket.

How it works

You bring the trousers to the studio at Wagenaarstraat 209 in Amsterdam East, a 4 minute walk from the Dapperstraat stop (tram 1 and 3, bus 37 and 41). Bring the shoes you usually wear with them and put them on as you normally wear them. We pin the trousers and you see straight away how they will fall.

Want to know in advance what is possible? Send a photo via WhatsApp to 020 668 5404 and we will take a look. You hear the price in the studio, always before we start.

Tip: take a photo before you bring the trousers in, so you can see exactly how good they look when they come back fitted. They are usually ready within 3 to 5 working days, and a rush job within 48 hours is usually possible.

Frequently asked questions

How much does taking in trousers cost?

Every pair of trousers is a custom job, so the price depends on what needs doing: the waistband through one seam or across three, the legs tapered, jeans with a flat felled seam, or tapering and shortening in one go. You hear the price in the studio before we start, with no surprises. Send a photo via WhatsApp first and we will take a look and tell you quickly what is possible.

Can jeans be taken in at the waist without it showing?

Yes, in most cases. We open the waistband, take in the centre back seam and topstitch the waistband again with the same thread. The belt loop goes back in the middle. From the outside you cannot see that the jeans have been taken in. Only with very big differences, more than 5 cm, can the fit of the pockets change slightly, and we tell you that in advance.

Can I have just the legs tapered?

Of course. If the waistband fits well but the legs are too wide, we only take in the legs. On jeans with a flat felled seam that is a little more work, which we tell you in advance. During the fitting you decide how slim you want them: slightly tapered, slim fit or skinny.

How many sizes can trousers be taken in?

One or two sizes usually works well, especially in the waistband and the legs. Beyond two sizes, the pockets, the crotch and the knee line shift, and the trousers never quite become like a pair in the right size. We tell you honestly what will look good and what will not, rather than taking in trousers that do not feel right afterwards.

Can trousers be let out too?

Often, yes, by 1 to 2 cm, depending on how much seam allowance there is in the seams. If there is not enough fabric, we can sometimes add a piece to the waistband or make an elastic insert. Send a photo of the inside of the waistband and we will see how much room there is.

Should I wash the trousers first?

Yes, please. Trousers that have never been washed can shrink slightly after the first wash, especially jeans and cotton. That is why we prefer to take them in at the size they have after washing. So wash the trousers first and then come for the fitting. Clean trousers are also nicer to work on in the studio.

  • Today I went to this shop and I needed to make some adjustments for my pants. Although there were other clients as well, yet he patiently measured what was needed and it was ready very quick. The price was a little bit higher than usual tailors, but if you are looking for a good quality, this is the right place to go.
