Clothing repair in Amsterdam East
For jacket and coat repair in Amsterdam, come to Small Couture in the Dapperbuurt. A broken zip, a torn lining or a hole in the sleeve need not be the end of a good coat. Tailor Pierre Hassan repairs winter coats, down jackets, raincoats and suit jackets in his own workshop. English spoken.
A coat repair is often a smaller job than you think. Replacing a zip, closing a tear, repairing a pocket: send a photo via WhatsApp and we will take a look and tell you quickly what is possible. You hear the price in the workshop, always in advance, with no surprises afterwards.
We repair coats with attention to the story behind them. Sometimes it is the coat of someone who is no longer here, sometimes just your favourite coat that has seen ten winters. Either way you get it back neat and wearable, usually within 3 to 5 working days.
The zip is the part that breaks most often. The teeth separate, the slider gets stuck or the bottom of the zip tears loose. On a coat we replace the whole zip with a new one of the same length and colour, also a long open ended zip as in a winter coat or parka.
If only the slider is worn, it can often be replaced on its own. That is a much smaller job and your coat closes again within a few days.
We use sturdy zips from YKK and comparable brands, so the new zip lasts longer than the old one. If you would like a different colour or a metal zip instead of plastic, just say so.
You feel a broken lining every time you put your coat on. Your arm catches, the pocket tears through or the bottom hangs loose. We repair a tear in the lining or a loose pocket, whatever the spot.
If the lining is thin and torn all over, replacing it is the better choice, in a coat as well as in a suit jacket. We choose a lining that suits the weight and colour of the outer fabric, so the coat glides smoothly over your clothes again.
You can also bring your own lining, for instance a bold print for a classic coat. That suddenly makes an old coat yours again.
Catch yourself on a bike handlebar or a nail and there is an L shaped tear in your coat. We close a tear like that neatly. On smooth fabrics we stitch the tear as finely as possible, on wool we work the edges in so the repair disappears into the fabric.
A hole or a burn mark can often be made invisible with a piece of fabric from the inside of the coat, from the hem or a pocket edge for example. That way the colour and texture stay exactly the same.
Loose seams, a broken pocket or a torn belt loop belong here too. Send a photo and we will tell you honestly whether it can be fixed neatly.
A beautiful coat with sleeves that are just too long never feels right. We shorten sleeves from the bottom or, if there is a cuff or vent, from the shoulder so the detail is kept. On a lined coat the lining is shortened along with it.
Shortening the whole coat is also possible. That applies to long wool coats, trench coats and raincoats. You try the coat on in the workshop, we pin the length and you see straight away how it falls.
Want the coat slimmer in the waist or the shoulders? That is tailoring work we are happy to look at, also on a suit jacket.
Repairing a winter coat calls for strong thread and the right needle, especially with thick wool or lined parkas. A down jacket is a different story: the tear has to be closed before the down leaks out. We close small holes in down jackets and replace zips in them too.
On a raincoat we make sure the repair affects the waterproof layer as little as possible. Sometimes gluing and stitching together is the best solution, sometimes stitching on the inside only.
Tip: take a photo before you bring the coat in, so you can see exactly how good it looks when it comes back repaired.
We also repair leather jackets in the workshop: replacing a zip, closing a tear or fitting a new lining. Leather needs different tools and a different approach from fabric.
Everything about leather, from closing a small hole to shortening sleeves, is on the page Leather repair.
A loose button you can sew on yourself. Replacing a zip in a lined coat is another matter: the lining has to be opened, the old zip taken out, the new one cut exactly to length and the lining closed again. Without a good machine that rarely turns out neat.
If you have the coat repaired here, you hear the price in advance in the workshop and have it back within 3 to 5 working days. A rush job within 48 hours is usually possible.
You will find us at Wagenaarstraat 209 in Amsterdam East, a 4 minute walk from the Dapperstraat stop (tram 1 and 3, bus 37 and 41). Call 020 668 5404 or send a photo via WhatsApp and we will take a look.
That depends on what is broken. Every coat is a custom job: a tear or a pocket is something different from a new zip or a complete new lining. You hear the price in the workshop before we start, or you send a photo via WhatsApp and we take a look first. We tell you honestly whether the repair is worth it.
Yes, almost always. We replace zips in coats, long open ended zips in winter coats and zips in leather jackets. If only the slider is broken, we replace just that. We find a zip in the same colour and length, or a different colour if you prefer.
A single tear or a loose pocket we simply repair. If the lining is thin or torn in several places, replacing it is the better and more lasting choice, in a coat as well as in a suit jacket. We look together at what is best for your coat.
Often, yes. On wool we work the edges in so the repair disappears into the fabric, and for a hole we use fabric from the inside of the coat. On smooth or shiny fabrics a fine line sometimes remains visible. We tell you that honestly in advance based on your photo.
You usually have your coat back within 3 to 5 working days. A zip or a new lining takes a little more time than closing a tear. In a hurry? A rush job within 48 hours is usually possible.
Yes. We replace zips in leather jackets, close tears and fit new linings. Leather needs its own tools and experience, and we have both in house. You can read more on the page Leather repair.
